The President of Brazil is coming out in favor of Civil Unions! I think this is a sign that everywhere around the world gays are being respected and looked upon as equal citizens.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said, "There are men living with men, women living with
women, and many times they live a balanced and even extraordinary life. The only thing that matters is that these individuals
are Brazilian citizens, and respect the Constitution. The rest is up to them,
and I am in favor of civil unions."

For a traditionally Catholic country, this is big step. Only one Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul, has recognized civil unions and with the support of the president other states may consider it.
