Congratulations on winning the competition! How does it feel to be America’s next drag superstar?
It feels like I’m on top of the world!
Your win didn’t come without a little controversy, but the most ridiculous claim of all was that RuPaul was racist for selecting another black queen. After all your hard work and effort, how did you react upon hearing this absurd theory?
I didn’t react. It went into one ear and right out of the other!
What do you have to say to all the haters who don’t believe you should have won?
Those who hate me hate themselves, and like Ru says, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”
Speaking of haters, Raven left an awfully nasty message on the mirror–”Keep reaching for the stars, because you’ll never be one!” Did she ever explain that to you?
That message wasn’t directed to me. Raven ends her local shows every week with that saying.
Let’s move on to something a little more positive. Your sense of style is absolutely stunning! Besides Beyoncé and Rihanna, what other fashion icons inspire your look?
Janelle Monaé, Monica & Lady Gaga.
Now that we’ve brought up Beyoncé, we can’t help but asking… What did you think of the new music video for “Why Don’t You Love Me”? What’s your favorite video by her?
I absolutely loved it! My favorite video by Beyoncé would have to be “Get Me Bodied”.
Back to the fashion for a second. Hypothetically, you’ve been chosen as a muse for a famous designer. Out of anyone dead or alive, who would you be most excited to work with?
SETH AARON!!!!!
How long does it take for you to transform from James to Tyra?
Comfortably, it takes about 2-3 hours.
While embodying the Tyra Sanchez persona, you made a decision to speak in a tone relatively close to your natural voice. What’s up with that?
I don’t change my voice at all. My goal is to look like a woman not to become one.
When you first walked into the competition, who did you think would be your biggest competition?
I thought I would be my biggest competition. I knew I had to work on my personality and people skills. I knew it would be the only thing standing in my way of the crown.
Which of the challenges did you enjoy most? Least?
The most was the rocker challenge. I knew I couldn’t sing, but I also knew I had immunity… so I just went out and had fun! My least favorite was the Drag Mother challenge. I’m not good with painting others and only comfortable painting my own face. So that was the hardest challenge for me.
The show seemed to paint you as a villain at times, but we get the impression that you’ve been cool with a lot of the other queens since then. Is there anyone you’re not in touch with?
I keep in touch with everyone!
You’ve met a bunch of celebrities since winning the competition. Who was the most exciting to meet?
Niecey Nash! I love her, she’s hilarious!
We also noticed that you acquired a new rack. Jeez, what are those things made of?
They are made of pure silicone. And a little milk, LMAO!
What’s next for Tyra Sanchez? Where do you see yourself in a year from now?
Maybe a movie, TV show or a fashion line. You never know. Gotta keep your eyes and ears open!
