I think it is dangerous to put matters like this in the hands of the voting public, and it displays very weak leadership skills and bigotry. End of story. She denies this is not about her personal feelings, but…she’s the one who’s just made a decision and is now making a speech in front of a camera about that decision. Those are actions only a person can do. Does she not consider herself a person, then?

Additionally, her wardrobe and overall energy read very gay to me.

The very notion that the majority should be able to decide if any legitimate minority group should or should not be treated equally in any respect is appalling.

If majority vote was required to “bestow” rights upon a minority, who should already have those rights, we would probably still have slaves and only white, land-owners would be able to vote.

It saddens me that America, the so-called land of the free, lags so far behind most other “first-world” countries in understanding that equality and freedom are for all citizens, not just those in charge.

I have experienced and have observed that gay people tend to not stay together very long. I’ve discussed this with other gay friends, and they agree. And if they do stay together they have to have an open relationship. So, why should we expect to have those rights granted to us when we can’t stay in a committed relationship the way it is?
I know that the argument will be that the divorce rate is high in the straight community. I know that. I’m not living in a cave. But I think until we can prove that we are capable of staying together for longer than a three year period (the average), we should not expect those rights.
Disagree with me all you want. I’m not going to argue.

Slavery was abolished because it became unproductive and uneconomical, women were accepted into the workplace and given the right to vote because it was productive and economical, and gays will be given their right to marry when…?????????

Who will be affected negatively by this? Representative democracy is a far cry from Lincoln’s loaded words, yes what a good idea it is to let the ignorant mob rule. You can only peddle backwards for so long before you end up right back where you started.

If you aren’t familiar with the story behind Gov. Lingle’s decision, this was a ploy by the Democrat-heavy State Legislature to force her to make a decision they themselves did not want to make due to the bill’s lack of popularity in Hawaii and the massive overkill of its exposure. So the Democrats decided to throw this measure in at the very last minute prior to the Legislature’s recess. It was underhanded that it made it through to the Governor’s desk, and the voters of Hawaii knew it.

Sure, the local gay community celebrated, but such tactics were not forgotten by the people who would eventually flood Gov. Lingle’s office with their objections.

Though she is a Republican, she votes very moderate and has been fair to the people of Hawaii. Her predecessors were all Democrats when similar bills reached their desks, and failed to pass into law…so this is not a Party issue no matter how much you want to make it out to be.

Our community does not need to stoop to such tactics, and the Democrats should be ashamed for their blatant attempts to pull the wool over the eyes of the people they represent! We can do better, and we can do it in such a way to appeal to the voters. We need the support of the people, or at least the majority of the people for us to live as we are, and under safe conditions. Passing an unpopular bill will no doubt anger the public, and potentially endanger the safety of those in the community. Our do-it-at-any-cost mentality negates our fight.

This was a sad event for the gay community in Hawaii, but we won’t surrender that easily.

First of all, you don’t know most gays and therefore you cannot say that “gay people tend to” do anything. Just because you and your unfortunate friends haven’t been in a lasting relationship doesn’t mean that plenty of us haven’t. Second, all of the gay couples I’m well acquainted with are NOT in open relationships. Third, who the fuck are you to decide whether an open relationship is good or bad?
