Let’s not get upset over this, because most Asians don’t know the difference between Asian and oriental. I’m Asian so I don’t get upset when someone calls me oriental. I just educate them on the difference. Asian is in reference to a person’s race/ethnicity because their heritage can be traced to a land in the Asian continent. Orient or oriental is in reference to an object, place or design. When you call an Asian an oriental, the insult comes in as you are calling the person an object or possession, not as an equal person. Another reason is that there are no countries called the Orient, so Orientals cannot come from there. Such as Chinese come from China and Filipinos come from the Philippines.
