Obama Talks Equality For Gays And Stonewall In Inauguration Speech

It’s evident that our community has come pretty damn far if the President is recognizing Stonewall, and stumping for equal rights for the LGBT community in his second inaugural speech.

Barack Obama is the first president to mention 1969′s Stonewall Riots alongside other notable civil rights’ flashpoints in his inauguration speech today, which also happens to be MLK Day.

While also calling for equal rights for women and immigrants, he noted that our nation’s journey isn’t complete until “our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.”

    Sorry guys, I don’t believe it for a second. Obama is a political animal and gives lip service to whatever causes will make poll points for him. I would love to think it is true but I have been around this block to many times in the past having worked in DC for most of my career. It really don’t matter which party is in or out the entrenched government power brokers will make the decisions and the talking heads will follow their marching orders.

    Even if it takes another 20 years for full equality, that speech made me feel so much better about my place in this country. I couldn’t have been happier with him and more proud to be an American. I’m glad that even if the Supreme Court doesn’t rule in our favor, that’s not going to be the end of the fight.

    It doesn’t really matter WHY he said it, all that matters is THAT he said it. Those words come from the Presidents mouth and onto the nations ears. Just HIM saying that will cause others to take action. It will empower the LGBT community to claim our power and fight for equality even harder because we feel supported (as opposed to hated by or ignored by) the President. He said a while back that “gays and lesbians should be able to get married”…and now in 3 days I will be legally marrying my partner of 12 years here in the state of Washington. His words definitely have impact. My hope is that he puts his actions behind them as well but just him saying it is a HUGE start in that direction.
