Well, just look at the discussion going on in the “hot or not: butt shaving” thread. I think the problem is that not all guys see aggressive/rough/violent sex in the same way. If you say you liked to get spanked, does that mean you want a few playful swats or do you want your ass beaten with a leather belt until there are welts? Obviously one would hope that in a serious, long-term relationship, the partners would be more open and honest about their sexual desires, but it can be hard to bring up with a hookup or a FWB.

I think it goes a little beyond not all men seeing aggressive/rough/violent sex in the same way, although I largely agree with you. That discussion is a perfect example. It’s not just a matter of not seeing desires in the same way, but also the fact that many men look down on people who enjoy rougher forms of sex. These men criticize and try to shame people who like that. It’s one thing not to see desire in the same light, it’s an entirely different thing to shame. It’s all well and good if you don’t get or don’t enjoy or don’t like rough sex, but don’t try to make other people feel ashamed that they do. And I think you’re right to point out that there is also spectrum of roughness (if you will). Ultimately, it appears that there’s a lot of fear and nervousness on all sides. People aren’t sure if their partners are into rough sex and might shame them or maybe the partners are into causing welts when all you want are some light raps on your ass while you get fucked. Or whatever. But as Dewitt points out, being open and honest with your partner will mollify many of these issues.
