Album Review: Bruno Mars

Within the past couple of months, Bruno Mars has developed quite a track record. The previously unknown songwriter stormed onto the scene this summer as a co-writer and guest vocalist on Travie McCoy‘s “Billionaire” and B.o.B.‘s number one hit “Nothin’ On You”. He then proceeded to top the Billboard charts with his first solo single “Just The Way You Are”. It’s pretty impressive, considering he was barely on the radar not so long ago.

This week, the young artist dropped his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, and it’s packed with even more radio-friendly tracks. The only catch? They don’t sound anything like the high-energy dance tunes currently populating radio’s playlists. Mars is blending pop, R&B and reggae sounds in a fashion that other singers will want to emulate, rather than latching onto current trends in popular music.

Sure, this may be high praise for a man who references the Snuggie (see “The Lazy Song”), but his lyrical flubs are forgivable in the grand scheme of things. It’s about time for a male artist to step forward–one who doesn’t blend in with every Taio Cruz, Jay Sean and Jason DeRulo singing about girls in the club. For now, Bruno Mars may be our best bet…
