Album Review: Shakira

Does anybody even know that Shakira has an album out today? It’s unfortunate that the promotion for Sale El Sol has been so horrible, because it happens to be one of the singer’s best albums since 2001’s Laundry Service. The project’s packed from start to finish with a variety of international sounds, largley focusing on a return to her Latin music roots.

Of course, we can’t forget about the much talked-about cover of British group The xx‘s “Islands”. Even though it’s an odd departure from the original version, the upbeat vibe works surprisingly well within the context of the album.

That’s probably the biggest difference between Sale El Sol and Shakira’s previous release. Despite its rare moments of genius, She Wolf was a scattered departure from her signature sound, with extreme emphasis on the “scattered” part. This collection of songs flows effortlessly, keeping you moving as you go along your way.

  1. Love Shakira! No clue she had an album coming out today. Definitely going to have to check this one out…Thanx!

  2. i am in my late 50s and i will be buying her new cd tomorrow. that young lady has great range and a deautiful voice

  3. The best of Shakira music is actually from her roots, before she became a commercial item…look for her discography and check out “Pies Descalzos” (Bare feet) and Donde estan los ladrones? (Where are the thieves?)…will have to check the new one….

  4. Definetly agree with you Carlos nd love you for saying that; i been following her career ever since i was a lil kid – being 21 now i grew up LITERARY with her music and i love how she has changed and grown with her music over the years but NOTHING will ever beat her Pies Descalzos album: Antologia, Donde Estas Corazon & Se Quiere,Se Mata are her best works ever. Shame not much comercialisation for her music but this album im purchasing as we speak! Thank you iTunes! VIVA COLOMBIA!!!

  5. I agree with Carlos, “Adonde estan los ladrones” Is one of my favorite albums of all time, not just of shakiras. I prefer pre-americanised shakira…

  6. She’s definitely the biggest Latin star ever. No doubt about it. Hope this album brings back some of the fans she lost with the crossover. Her first three albums in Spanish were the best of her career. Hard to believe that she’s been in this business 20 years now.

  7. I love this album!!! Rabiosa, Addicted to you, Loca, Gordita and Lo que mas are my favourites (or maybe the whole album :)). I’m glad she used merengue influences in this album. I’ve liked all her albums even She Wolf.

  8. @ mike, open up. and not ur legs, learn how to close those.

I thought “She-Wolf” was amazing. The vibe was amazing. It was party, heartbreak, and sexual appeal. She stepped out of her boundaries for it.

“Sale el Sol” is a little safe but she pulled some “She-Wolf” attributes for those who enjoyed it.
