Discuss: PositiveLife’s WRAPPED OR RAW Campaign

Pos-pos sex isn’t something we talk about every day. This may sound like a giant “duh”, but an individual’s sex life doesn’t come to an end when he becomes HIV-positive. Of course, it’d be ridiculous to assume all HIV-positive men are using condoms in the bedroom with other pos guys, but what resources are available for guys who want to manage risk, stay healthy and have great sex?

Enter the WRAPPED OR RAW campaign, from Australian organization Positive Life NSW. The campaign acknowledges that, in 2010, gay men are continuing to develop new ways to manage the risk of HIV transmission, including pos-pos sex. The organizers believe other HIV campaigns and resources need to recognize this, while continuing to promote a community-wide message that condoms and lube are effective means for HIV prevention.

“We know that most men in Sydney use condoms most of the time,” says CEO Rob Lake. “In fact, the recent PASH Study reported 59.5% use them all the time with casual partners. We also need strategies that acknowledge the education needs of the other 40.5%”.

The WRAPPED OR RAW site provides a forum for HIV-positive men to share their stories, talk with each other and leave comments. It emphasizes disclosure and communication, while offering information on other health risks such as LGV, Syphilis, Hepatitis-C and HIV-reinfection. Overall, what do you think of the campaign? Should more organizations acknowledge choices made by pos guys about using condoms in pos-pos sex in their print and online resources?

  1. It’s called “Barebacking” and anyone who barebacks is to be considered “Poz” whether they are or not because, they aren’t gonna get tested EVERY time they have sex and, it only takes once to become infected (common sense). So, when someone who barebacks claims to be “Neg”, they are being disengenuous to say the least or, dishonest to be honest. And, newly infected people are the most infectious(common sense) Nevertheless, it’s, a personal CHOICE and, nobody elses business other than the ones who are barebacking (Period).

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t HIV have different types and forms? Meaning, if you contract HIV it isn’t necessarily intelligent to assume you can ‘bareback’ with other positive guys.

  4. legitimizing barebacking among HIV positive men is a bad step — it sends the wrong message about safe sex (i.e. once you’re infected, its no longer necessary), and increases the risks the spread of a host of other STDs to a population whose immune system is already compromised.

  5. Y Is this whole place in DENIAL
at least 80-90% of active men are bb friendly you know and we have been doing it this way when people were being lost daily to AIDS and boys still liked raw play. I have no solution and I have limited my personal baggage on the matter. But when it comes to fun in bed men are as usual piggy and thinkin with neither head.
So – to me – it is what it is no longer fits = it is what we risk for being hot in bed with hot players
Deal or no Deal but at least real.

  6. You cannot get AIDS from fucking without a condom. It’s a fallacy. The bacteria in shit kills the HIV virus instantly. It’s saliva that causes AIDS. I haven’t fucked with a condom in 20 years and I’m still negative. Cumming in someones ass is perfectly safe.

  8. You are completely wrong in this assumption. The gastro-INTESTINAL tract (G.I tract) is the largest immune-system related organ system in the body. Because of this bareback sex is extremely risky, as the cells the HIV virus infects are highly abundant in the walls of the rectum.

Bacteria aren’t going to protect us against a virus like HIV, they will against other bacteria as it is in their own interest to be the dominant flora of our GI tract.

  9. Much to my disgust; and my partners anger. My partner and I have been having unprotected sex for 4 years now. I was positive and recently medicated with success. My partner has never taken PEP with has been his own free and my disgusted will. His last test still proved negative. My concern with Our community is Not he said she said rubbish; but the fact that 40 somethings ( some) are using the HIV epidemic to promote fear – inorder to keep having unprotected sex. I regretably agree that chunky condoms have numbed the feeling – However If our newerst generation were being encouraged from the start to wear condomns by there older peers – why are we still seeing 300 new cases in melbourne each year? We have tried fruitlessly to stem the spread, and left some of the campaigning up to drug affected sex addicts to lead us in regulation. We also have a senario when prevention has had imput from the cathoilc church – when outspoken fragments have been quite public about their hatred and believe that Poz is justice. If we as a community Treat our Phsychological disorders from Highschool and the scenbe’s sex addition.. Isn’t that killlling two birds with one stone?

  10. this post is well informed and i approve (can use some improvements on their stance sure, but it’s still well off.)

i don’t entirely approve of the posters here however, some have incredibly misinformed information.

i don’t know what to say, if you’re a sexually active individual, you should have so much responsibility to at the very least, educate yourself on HIV and other STIs, before you go abouts spouting nonsense and bigotry about HIV and STIs. (especially as a gay man.)

  11. There is no credible epidemiologic data, whatsoever, to support the conclusion that you cannot get HIV infection from unprotected (bareback) anal sex.

There is plenty of credible epidemiologic data to support the conclusion that unprotected anal sex is a high risk activity for transmission of HIV infection.

People who say that HIV cannot be contracted via anal sex are wrong.

    Do not listen to them.

  12. Poz-Poz bareback sex may not be safe.

The HIV virus recombines and mutates very quickly. One worry is that a person with HIV who inconsistently takes his medications (and therefore develops high resistance) could transmit resistance genes to another person whose infection is not resistant.

This is believed to possibly account for cases of HIV infections that develop resistance to treatment unusually quickly, as well as for new HIV infections that are highly resistant.

For men who have sex with men, it is always recommended that condoms be used … even between poz partners.

  13. the reason poz guys enjoy having sex with poz men is that the baggages dissapears that keep s neg men from experiment ing witn poz/ neg relationship

  14. There is more viral variance within one HIV positive person, then there is variance between all the influenza strains (thats normal flu, swine flu, bird flu, spanish flu and a few others).

When an HIV positive person gets reinfected, its known as a superinfection and is actually fairly common relative to the amount of pos-pos sexual activity. People with superinfection are more resistant to ARV treatment and have a poorer prognosis than the general pos population.

  15. Here’s a great opportunity for ManHunt Cares to actually post something but once again they remain silent.

A few things to consider…..there is a world of difference between poz/poz and poz/undetectable with poz/undetectable yet MH refuses to offer that as an option for status. The truth is the risk of super infection of both guys are on meds is slim to none……it is a theory. However, if one or both of the partners are NOT on meds that is a different situation completely.

And yes, risk of other STDs still exists…if should be informed decisions/consent. When it appears it could lead to something I ALWAYS disclose my status and let the potential partner decides what’s best for them and us. And given the stigma that continues to exist in the gay community regarding “DISEASED!” no wonder why so many guys with no moral compass just lie and put in their profile “negative” which is outrageous.

Old adage remains…….treat everyone as poz and act for what works for you!

  16. It’s always so interesting to read comments about what a poz man should/should not be allowed to do with another consenting poz man! It’s also so very interesting to see the absence of any commentary or discourse on the ubiquitous drug use within the “clean” and “bug-free” population of our community. I would venture a guess that this is quite hypocritical! My advice would be to clean out your own closet first, before meddling in another person’s.

  17. hasn’t superinfection only been documented to actually happen in SIV and no proof yet exists for HIV?

  18. HIV is not a bug. It’s a virus that has a habit of mutating. In spite of that, people like you still encourage two positive individuals to engage in sexual acts with each other.

Let’s just get this out loud and clear: HIV has different strains. You might have one and your partner might have another. Contracting another strain adds to the resistant nature of the HIV when chemically treated.

  19. And you Rob need to understand more. Yes there are different strains, and if 2 guys are positive and carrying high viral loads with low CD4 counts, then there is the risk of superinfection. You make it seem black and white when it isn’t. If both are on meds (think PEP if you were suddenly raped/possible infection) the meds in your bloodstream kick the shit out of the virus. That’s why 2 guys that are both poz/undetectable are highly unlikely to be at risk for this notion of “superinfection” – and I know, I’ve had that conversation with my physician. And btw, for many of us that are undetectable and on meds with 100% adherence we have 100% normal range t-cells/CD4 count to fight infection. I’d bet I’m healthier than most “hiv-“/disease free guys that could be walking STD factories.

ManhuntCares unfortunately does NOTHING to better educate gay men – and just saying go get tested it’s annual AIDS day on December 1st is meaningless.

  20. I’m poz, and my poz f/buddy and I have been screwing bb for ten years. It is no=ones business to tell me what we should do.
