Album Review: Soldier of Love by Sade

Sade Adu, Soldier of Love, ten years, new album, music, review, Be That Easy, Babyfather, R&B, release, country, reggae, genres, soul, calm, lullabies, sorrow

If the lyrical content of Soldier of Love is any indication of Sade Adu's personal life, it's clear that she's been through a lot in the ten years since Lovers Rock. The album is littered with themes of heartbreak, sorrow and overcoming struggle. Yet despite such a somber tone, the band's brilliant leading woman sings the songs as if they're lullabies. There's a sense of catharsis as she spins a web of grief with her soothing vocals.

In an industry fueled by such vapid acts as Ke$ha and The Black Eyed Peas, it's a breath of fresh air to know that this week's biggest release comes from a much calmer place. From the reggae vibe of "Babyfather" to the country-esque "Be That Easy", this is music for starting your morning on a quiet note or cooling down after the clubs let out. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure is a really good cup of tea.

  1. Went out to buy it first thing this morning. It is an amazing CD. I, too, hope she tours this year.

  2. Just bought the album and I have to agree Dewitt…it’s a damn good cup of tea. Ms. Adu’s voice has only gotten better with time.
