We’d Like To Thank Tony Scott For Giving Us “Top Gun” Among Other Awesome Flicks

This is the sadness. Veteran director Tony Scott (Beverly Hills Cop II, Enemy Of The State, True Romance) committed suicide yesterday by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, CA. He was 68. CNN reports that Scott left a suicide note in his office. Ouch.

He leaves many, many rad films behind. I think I’ve seen True Romance about three jillion times, and it never fails to delight me. But the one film I and many other homosexuals will always be grateful to Scott for is Top Gun. Top Gun is the gayest movie ever made outside of gay porn. Straight guys had the Victoria’s Secret catalog. We had Top Gun. Slo-mo shots of bare-chested flyboys playing volleyball. Homoerotic chest-thumping in the locker room. A pre-creepy Tom Cruise. A pre-fatty Val Kilmer. Mourning for our fallen lover Goose. Kelly McGinnis ended up being a dyke anyway.

Whether he was intentional about it or not, Top Gun was a major part of my sexual awakening. It was the same for other young gay-bees. You were a talented filmmaker, Mr. Scott, and you shall be sorely missed by a section of the population that you probably didn’t even know were fans.

  1. The volley ball/shower scene. I wonder if there was a gay boy anywhere who didn’t perv out to this when they first saw it? I know I did, I was 17ish when I first saw it & damn did it do a number on me lol Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards & Rick Rossovich all shirtless & sweaty!! One of the best movie scenes ever!

I also love True Romance, excellent performances by all, notably Patricia Arquette, & Gary Oldman as Drexl but especially a very very funny small part by Brad Pitt “Hey! Get some beer and some cleaning products!”. There’s also a cameo by pre Pulp Fiction Samuel L. Jackson.

    This is very sad news!

  2. A true gay icon whose career spanned almost fifty years passes away and a director with a few hits gets more attention than Phyllis Diller? Shameful!
