I love my upbeat grooves, but every now and then I need to slow it down with something a little more introspective or thought provoking. The new album by openly gay singer/songwriter Gregory Douglass, Battler, is the perfect soundtrack for days when you’re just not up for dancing. Douglass’ influences include Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, Tori Amos and Kate Bush… and it shows!
Above is the video for his controversial lead single “Cathedrals”, a song that deals with issues of sexual addiction and touches upon some hot-button topics of religion. The video features a steamy make out scene with Douglass’ real life boyfriend which left me wishing that I could see the rest of their back alley antics!
If you like what you see and hear, be sure to pick up Battler on iTunes or elsewhere. I highly recommend “Day of the Battler” and “Broken Through” for any Fiona or Tori fans!

Thanks! I enjoyed that. For anyone wondering, the lyrics are:
why do birds fly away when you wish them to stay?
oh what it would feel to be flying over cathedrals?
why can’t i free the chains that are inside of me?
oh what it would mean to be flying over cathedrals?
cathedrals on lonely nights
will never see the dawn of the light
all my sins are going to thrive silently guilty here
whenever you’re near
why do birds climb the sky before waving goodbye?
oh what it would feel to be flying over cathedrals?
why can’t i chaperone? must i go it alone?
oh what it would mean to be flying over cathedrals?
