I love movies, and as a one-time film major, I love to criticize (and praise) them. So every now and then when I catch a movie, I’ll be sharing my thoughts with you!
The first movie up is Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild. In this follow up to the hilarious original, Another Gay Movie, the first thing that strikes the viewer is that 3 of the original guys are not reprising their roles. This normally would be a turn off for me, but they managed successfully to let the viewer understand as they directly criticized managers who ‘don’t let their actors play gay twice in a roll.’
With that aside, the movie continues as the foursome of friends travel to Ft. Lauderdale for Gay Spring Break and find themselves in the ‘Gays Gone Wild’ contest to see who can get the most man-love.
The Good: The movie is full of great cameos including RuPaul, Brent Corrigan, and a hilarious part for Perez Hilton (who becomes a born-again Christian after a mile-high incident with a priest). The humor is even more vulgar than the original and often strikes the right tones in campy and outrageous ways. I laughed a lot; that’s always good. The main characters had interesting stories, and I think they are better looking than the original cast (and better actors). Jonah Blechman turns out another great performance and the never-ending sex is also a plus.
The bad: The humor is a mix of good and bad, while a majority of the time I found myself and the theater audience laughing, there were some instances where the room was silent as the level of crudeness went through the roof as father and son vomit repeatedly all over each other and giant genital crabs make their way into the story one too many times. The antagonists, known as ‘The Jaspers,’ had potential for campy fun, but didn’t deliver.
The overall verdict is if you liked the first one, you’ll like the second one. If you hated the first one, don’t expect anything different from the sequel. I enjoyed it, and recommend it if you like campy silliness with more vulgar humor than some early John Waters!
