GLAAD‘s 13th annual "Where We Are On TV" report has come out, and it shows that LGBT representations have doubled in the last year. GLAAD annually calculates what percentage of characters in scripted series are described as GLBT by five major networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, The CW).
The number was a low 1.1% in 2007 but has shot up to 2.6% for 2008-2009 season!
Some of my favorites include Oscar from The Office, the alien from American Dad, and Patty and Smithers from The Simpsons among many others.
Interesting finds of the report:
- 2.6% of regular characters portrayed as gay, an increase from 1.1% in 2007, 1.3% in 2006, and 1.4% in 2005
- Out of a total of 616 characters, 16 are GLBT
- Fox went from zero last season, to 5 out of 97 this time around, making it the network with the highest percentage at 5%
- They are followed by ABC at 4%, NBC at 2%
- CBS and the CW have disappointed with only one recurring character each
- On Cable networks, the number of characters has dropped to 32, from all time high of 40 last season
