Today HBO has picked up True Blood for a second season.
The show war created by Alan Ball, of Six Feet Under fame, and is based on the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris.
The show got picked up for a second season so quickly because the first two episodes have been a hit. The pilot attracted more than four million viewers, and the second episode saw a 24% gain in audience! That is very high and had the execs at HBO jumping for joy I’m sure.
I personally LOVE the show and how it manages to successfully mix comedy, suspense, and mystery. True Blood revolves around Sookie Stackhouse, (played by Anna Paquin) a telepathic waitress who gets closely involved with a vampire. In the near future, vampires have ‘come out’ after the invention of True Blood, a synthetic blood that allows them to live among humans. Naturally, it evokes some social commentary as a ‘vampire civil rights’ campaign becomes a backdrop to the character’s stories but the main draw of the show is how well Ball manages to mix all these elements and still maintains a cohesive and entertaining story.
All in all, Alan Ball has struck gold again with this one!
True Blood airs on Sundays at 9 PM ET on HBO and is highly recommended.
