While browsing the internets this morning I found this article. It tells the story of a Florida school principal who outed a young gay student, and then proceeded to go on a ‘witch hunt’ to find and punish other gay, or gay-friendly students in a small Florida town.
A friend of the outed student was confronted by the principal for showing support, and decided to get the A.C.L.U involved with the case, eventually leading to the demotion of the principal and a hefty penalty for the school district. This has been quite a controversy in the small town of Ponce De Leon, Fla. and many residents feel this is an attack on their values:
"’We are a small, rural district in the Bible Belt with strong Christian
beliefs and feel like homosexuality is wrong," said Steve Griffin,
Holmes County’s school superintendent, who keeps a Bible on his desk
and framed Scriptures on his office walls."
Griffin has allowed the principal to remain teaching at the school, I just hope he is not still attacking gay students. From someone who has had two homophobic teachers while in High School, take it from me, it is not easy or fun.
