His outfit honors a classic look from the long-running sci-fi drama. Gatwa is the first Black Doctor in the series – and presumably the first gay one as well.
Gatwa will play the 15th incarnation of the Doctor, replacing Jodie Whittaker. In October’s finale, Whittaker regenerated into David Tennant, a previous Doctor. Fans believe he’ll be the Doctor again for next year’s anniversary special, then the Doctor will regenerate again as Gatwa.

It’s a Sin director Russel T. Davies is returning as Doctor Who’s showrunner, just in time for its 60th anniversary. Ruby Sunday is also joining the series as Millie Gibson. Uncoupled star Neil Patrick Harris will be playing a villain.
“I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he’s glorious,” said Harris about Gatwa. “He’ll be the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor.”
