Openly gay actor Rupert Everett blames Jennifer Aniston and the heterosexual Hollywood establishment for his diminished film career. In an interview with BBC 4, the British actor opines that the glamorous world of show business is run by not-so-glittery straight people who aren’t willing to give a gay a chance.
“I never got a job here, after (coming out). I did a couple of films, I was very lucky at the beginning of my career… and then, I never had another job here for ten years probably and I moved to Europe,” he said.
He also notes that Jennifer Aniston can do a whole slew of box office failures wherein she plays women who own bakeries who meet cute with widowed dog walkers and the movie will tank. But she’ll still come out on top. And that riles his ass:
“Like Jennifer Aniston will just have one too many total flops. But she’s still a member of that club. And she will still manage to — like a star forming in the universe — a whole lot of things swirling around and suddenly solidifying into yet another vital tasteless romcom: a little glitter next to the Crab Nebula.”
Everett was one of the first cool gay guys I can remember seeing in a movie (My Best Friend’s Wedding) and that was a big deal back in 1997. The urbane, flawless gay dude who has his shit together far more than the straight people around him is now almost a media stereotype. And it’s thanks to him. It was a lot more empowering back then for us as opposed to your typical nelly caricature. Someone give Rupert a job!

Maybe it’s just me, but he sounds like a totally bitter queen hell-bent on blaming others for his career tanking. Neil Patrick Harris is openly gay as well, and he has no problems getting high profile jobs (How I Met Your Mother, hosting awards shows, he was also in the two Harold & Kumar movies) and being well liked.
That being said, he does have a few good points. Jennifer Aniston hasn’t ever really been in a good movie that’s been a blockbuster. Yet people still like her. She still gets roles. Part of that, I think, is that she’s likeable and recognizable. Rupert, again, comes across as grouchy and mean.
I hope he isn’t hoping to get support from this gay man – I have loved Jennifer Aniston in everything she has done. I understand many are waiting for her to do a “big dramatic role” that will blow their socks off, and I would also love that for her. Also, she isn’t running around acting like she’s the shit. But honestly, there is nothing wrong with loving your job and doing it well – one doesn’t have to change the world with each role. Not to mention, in every interview I have seen of her she comes off as one of the most down-to-earth and genuinely-nice actors out there.
Rupert, like I have done recently albeit in a vastly different career field, needs to realize people aren’t always going to be seeking you out. You need to go out there and make things happen for you…

Has he ever played anything than the same character? after the way he openly gave up the backstage secrets of the people who had worked with him in his books is it any wonder no one wants to work with some one who is likely to betray their trust for gain later. There are lots of straight guys with the same look and acting skills as him who struggle for acting jobs.
Jennifer is a star and the dvds do well enough even if the movie release dont – if she didnt make money they would drop her the same as they have him as the public dont want to see him – its not his sexuality they dont like his attitude and character.
Mr Everett was a hot young man. Something has happened to his beauty.. bitterness? Shame really.
I’m just not a fan. He always comes across as stiff and wooden. I don’t think he’s that great an actor.

I feel that I need to say (and link a good article that came out after he made this un-informed rant) that Jennifer Aniston (as pointed out in the linked article) has had very few movies that have not made back their budget (and many more millions of dollars), and has in fact had a couple box office hits in the last few year. She just tends to stick to what she does best, and she is always a consistent box office draw, even if her films don’t recieve glowing reviews.

unless we have read the entire interview, we cannot assume that he came out and said this out of nowhere…. this could’ve been coaxed by the reporter…. this was a sit down interview and not some random statement made… I’m sure he addressed many other things as well, and had as much edited out too…

I am not a fan of Jennifer Aniston, but I do think she’s attractive. I seen her in the movie Bounty Hunger last night on Comcast with Gerald Butler. Gerald Butler was sexy in the movie Dracula, but he seem to have gotten thick over the years. I still would fornicate with Gerald Butler. LOL Remember people will get old and their looks will change in time. No one looks or stays the same forever. Rupert Everett is a middle aged 52 year old man, but this doesn’t mean he’s not an attractive hot man. Tim Daly of ABC’s “The Practice” is 55 years old and he’s still hot. I would take Tim Daly anytime over these hot young twinks on Manhunt Daily.

Rupert Everett has always been his own worst enemy in Hollywood. He was hot in the industry for a couple of years, but his on set bitterness and negativity got in his way. not to mention being a little too outspoken about decsion makers in Hollywood. You can’t bite the hand that feeds you in that industry. Once you are known as difficult or disagreeable, it takes a while before someone lets you in the door. Look at someone like Bette Midler. Hasn’t made a film in years because she is notoriously difficult, despite her talent. There are many in fall in this catergory, so unless he can show them otherwise, he’ll have to finance his own project to get people to look at his talent again.

I would be very careful not to do the american overreaction everytime you see a negative comment on our lifestyle or culture and it’s lack of value. We do pursue mediocre entertainment. Look at where many of our comedies originate … ENGLAND!
HUGE fan of Rupert Everett here. I’ve enjoyed and admired his career of off-beat movies and characters (until today I thought I was the ONLY one who had seen “Cemetary Man”) The thing is, he’s too outspoken and unique to fit in with mainstream Hollywood. Sure, he could have taken the ca$h and played Julia Robert’s purse for 10 more years, but he didn’t, and whether that was by choice or not, the result is that he’s way more interesting. So Rupert, just keep doing what you’re doing. You’ll be fine.
I first saw Rupert Everett in the “sorta fact based in a way” movie, “Another Country” in the mid to late 80s where he played a fictionalized version of Guy Burgess, the gay British born Soviet Spy. In it, he was dreamy, as was his love interest in the film, Cary Elwes. It was a great film, but not because of Rupert’s acting, which I compare to an extended high-end cologne ad- lots of arched eyebrows, lounging in boats and on tufted couches. He got lots of press for that role, but then he fell victim to the same thing lots of new Hollywood talent does- he believed his own press. And now the face lift, which renders him completely unrecognizable. It is very sad to see people rip other people in their profession solely because they wasted their own opportunity for advancement. If you haven’t seen “Another Country”, seek it out, it is well worth a look if only to document the beauty of its 3 young stars (Everett, Elwes and Colin Firth).
Bette Midler should never sing again- the last few times I heard her she was incredibly, PAINFULLY flat and does herself no favors by appearing that way.
Bitter or not, he’s still telling the truth. It’s so refreshing that somebody in Hollywood has got the balls to say it out loud. These comments are probably gonna alienate him even more and that makes him even more courageous in my book.
Honestly, outside of being lucky enough to have been in one of the biggest sitcoms ever and being married to Brad Pitt, what has Jennifer Aniston got that makes her still deserve to be on the cover of Us magazine? Her looks and talent are average at best and all of her movies have been commercial and critical bombs since Friends, maybe since forever even.

Shes harmless and Rupert is not credible. He is not even recognizable as the man that was once Rupert Everett and he can thank his plastic surgeon for that.
Some of you have to realize that Gay are just starting to be accepted in Hollywood to a certain percent. Rupert is a amazing actor and while it may have been the wrong time to come out for him, we should not cast him off for being open and honest about the direction Hollywood has taken, maybe down the road Neil Patrick Harris will fade away too along with the other openly gay performers, I hope not! but it could happen.
I use to see Rupert on the street alot with his dog or in the gym and he’s a very quit guy and when he spoke he was nice.
