It's a sad day in the world of high fashion. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose Twitter feed is abuzz with the news that British designer Alexander McQueen took his own life today at the mere age of forty. These somber reports come only a few days before the start of London's fashion week.
When I first heard about this, I didn't believe it. When I read the reports myself, I didn't want to believe it. McQueen was, quite simply, a creative genius. His designs could inspire awe from even the least fashion-conscious individuals. It's not just sad to see him go… it's sad to see him go the way he did.

its just sad. he was such an artistic person, who showed the world that clothing and fashion is so much more than ready to wear but more of an expression of self. With designers like john galliano and riccardo tisci that both with similar styles as mcqueen, i hope his vision carries on

Note to Peter: Alexander McQueen was one of the most respected designers of the last 20 years. You can see his influence just about everywhere, even on the street. He was a brilliant designer and will be sorely missed. People who write fashion off as frivolous have neither any appreciation for art (art in it’s truly most practical form) or recognise fashion’s ability to create social change. I would think long and hard before you make any remarks like that in the future. Fashion is not just about yards and yards of chiffon. And just because you don’t work with a wrench all day doesn’t make you any less masculine.

In my profession I take care of those persons who find themselves in Pallitaive Care. At my Hospice for the dying I ensure that their final days (as a result of old age and extreme illness)are as beautiful and as peaceful as they can possibly be.
Therefore, it both frustrates and saddens me – when a life terminates through suicide.
@peter it’s good work for sure, I did my stint at hospice during med school but as a psychiatrist there is a valid questioning in statements of respect towards the dead whether it be the result of ones own hand or natural. There is a lot of pain out there that people don’t understand and probably aren’t ever meant to understand. If you think about it, people who are in hospice are supported and comforted into the idea of death and peace; when someone decides to commit suicide they usually go through the same process but by themselves. Death is never easy. Believe me it’s the worst when a patient dies that way, one can only feel useless.
It was upsetting to read your statement of this person whose work has influenced fashion and art. He wasn’t a bad person so I didn’t see the justification of the negative comment.
All I’m trying to say is that life is to short to be cynical.
