Aural Only: David Guetta & Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi, David Guetta, Memories, music video, single cover, international, rapper, singer, vocalist, One Love, album, dance, club, beat, premiere

I'm conflicted on the idea of David Guetta and Kid Cudi collaborating together for "Memories". In the right hands, a David Guetta beat can be quite magical. We learned this last summer when he worked with Kelly Rowland for "When Love Takes Over". But in the wrong hands? Well, we wind up with something like Will.i.am and the Black Eyed Peas warbling along on "I Gotta Feeling" (which I begrudgingly realize some people consider good music).

Guetta is at his best when he works with talented vocalists, and Kid Cudi isn't packing much in that department. His sing-songy raps are delightful when they're laid over a mellow backbeat, but they sound out of place on a song made for the clubs. What do you guys think of this one? Should I just shut my face and stop being so critical?

  1. This song has been a hit for months…and for good reason. Kid Cudi’s got some great mellow lyrics and beats and Guetta just improved this one. This song is 100% more unique than the typical gay tune that Guetta produced with Kelly Rowland.
But yes, I agree…the video is pretty low-budget

  2. I think Cudi is really talented lyricist. With being said, this song does fall a bit flat compared to some of the stuff on his album. I still like the song though.

  3. I love this song and Kid Cudi is fucking fucking amazing. Except for Day and Night which is annoying. You should give the album an actual listen. Up up and away, soundtrack to my life, pursuit of happiness…are great places to start. And SO many collaborations with MGMT and Rattatat…which is what got me hooked in the first place.
