Album Review: Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky by OK Go

Once upon a time, OK Go was nothing more than a somewhat obscure band who churned out anthemic, frat boy-friendly rock jams. Then they hopped on some treadmills and became internet superstars with their innovative music video "Here It Goes Again". And for their third release Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, the dastardly foursome pulled another rabbit out of their hats. They became a legitimately good band.

The distortion-heavy album opener "WTF?" may not be the best indication of this–as the title will pretty much sum up your reaction to the song–but you're in for a treat if you listen a little longer. These guys have clearly been studying Prince's Purple Rain, because there are moments on this project where you'll swear you're listening to outtakes from the purple one's recording sessions.

Just take "White Knuckles" and "End Love" around for a spin. Both songs extend beyond the realm of imitation or appropriation into a territory of innovation. In fact, Prince wishes he could still make songs as good as these. With that said, OK Go also wishes they could make an album as good as Prince. Though Blue Colour contains a lot of gems, it's far from perfect. The boys haven't quite reached their full potential, but they're marching forward… like the subjects of their latest music video. Just because they're becoming a better band, that doesn't mean they don't need gimmicks.
