Every now and then, I will unconsciously alter the pitch of my "phone voice". I've do this while ordering food. I do this while picking up a call from an unknown number. I just want to stress–there is nothing intentional about this. I've even tried to use my normal voice while taking calls, and then I just wound up fluctuating between the two. Let's just say it didn't sound pretty.
A friend once noticed my tendency to go butch and accused me of harvesting a bit of internalized homophobia. I reacted quite defensively at the time. While I wholeheartedly admit this was a behavior carried over from my closeted days, the "homophobia" word just got under my skin…
But how comfortable am I in that skin? Or more accurately, with these vocal chords. I've been known to deliberately change my voice while talking to potential sexual partners. When a guy writes on his Manhunt profile that he's only looking for "masculine guys" or he has no tolerance for "fems", these expressions make me oddly nervous. It causes me to speak in my "phone voice", just to ensure that I get in their pants.
It's not like I'm dancing on pride floats in rainbow thongs, but I'm certainly not the figurehead of masculinity. If I stretch the truth by making my voice a bit deeper, which is worse–my dishonesty or my insecurity? To be honest, I've never thought much about it. There are worse lies to tell in this world. And by the time I start plowing these so-called "butch" guys' asses, they're already screaming an octave higher…

Yup, sadly I have a phone voice I used to work for a call center I was always called ma’am.
Once I was sick and got called sir thought they were talking to someone else I waited they said sir again and I learned they were talking to me.
Guess my voice goes up when I don’t know someone.
People who I talk to a lot don’t hear it. Weird.
I have a phone voice, but I raise my voice’s pitch. If I talk normally it’s pretty much a low mumble which is hard to hear on the phone, so I really only talk to my family and close friends in a normal voice since they’re use to it.
I also raise my voice when waiting on tables, since it gives a warmer and friendly tone than my normal voice.
Well i have been told I have a deep sexy phone voice that drives people wild. But then again I could not get a number walking thru a prison with a fistfull of pardons…LOL.. Maybe my phone voice is why it is easier to talk on phone but cant figure out what to say in person
Yes, I definitely have a phone voice, but it’s only slightly deeper than my normal one. I sing bass, when I sing (badly, I admit). In one company I worked for, one of our San Diego offices referred to me as “the guy with the voice”, and I’ve had people ask me if I did voice-over work, or would be interested.

Well when I was younger and picked up the phone people thought I was a girl a lot. So I guess it was an unconscious thing when I started going through puberty and what not that I had a phone voice. And even now it’s deeper, unless I know the person well enough or I’m drinking then my flame tends to burn a bit brighter.
Dewitt I am in the exact same boat as you. I too find myself modifying my voice a bit when meeting new people, especially if I’m hoping for them to find me attractive. I also find it weird when guys say they are not attracted to fems but prefer masculinity. I always have a hard time with this because, what really is masculine? being honest about yourself and who you are? playing a lot of sports? spitting? 😛

If you have to modulate your voice to sound more “masculine”, it doesn’t work for me; it’ll make my dick go limp faster than you can say “bi-atch”. I can sense the pretender and there’s nothing more entertaining than hearing “the switch” within seconds once they feel more comfortable with you. LOL.
I feel like everybody should just be natural and let other guys be attracted to him for what they are. There are guys who don’t mind the flame anyway. And, yes, some guys don’t have to “act” masculine; they just naturally are.

Guilty. I change my voice. And it’s because I think my voice just doesn’t fit my physique. I’m this big, masculine dude and everyone expects this gruntish voice – my voice sounds more immature – not feminine just boyish. I hate it.

I’ve never noticed if I have a phone voice or not. I have noticed myself lowering it occasionally when I can hear my own voice (recordings, etc.), as it tends to come out a lot less “manly” than it sounds in my head. Really, a lot. It reminds me of that old SNL sketch with the guy recording his answering machine message.
My voice is deep and low and gravelly, so I hate it. I sound like a smoker, though I don’t smoke and never have! I’ve been told by many people they love my voice, but I don’t hear it. Guess it goes back to feeling insecure about something that only the individual themself recognizes.
I have a super polite, effeminate and pleasant phone voice, it’s how I got hired as a receptionist in a plastic surgeon’s office. I didn’t realize how fem I sounded until some old lady came in that I’d spoken to and she wanted to talk to the lady she spoke with on the phone earlier and REFUSED to deal with me.
Well I’ve never really had that problem per sey as my voice is normally deep, but there are times I will deepen it even further into the Barry White range.
