If you've heard one Carrie Underwood album, you've heard them all. This isn't her fault, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. Country music generally operates under a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy. No matter what she puts out, there'll always be fag hags to sing her songs at karaoke bars. And what else does her career need?
With seven number one country singles and two multi-platinum albums behind her, there's no incentive or logical reason for Underwood to experiment with her sound. This is wildly evident while listening to her latest project Play On. Rather than trying to recreate the crossover success of "Before He Cheats" (see "Last Name"), she's dug even deeper into her Nashville roots.
As a result, the best songs on this album are the slower-paced or mid-tempo numbers. With the exception of "Undo It" and "Songs Like This", that actually accounts for the majority of the tracks. Long story short, if you're a Carrie Underwood fan, this is an absolute must-have. If you never liked her in the past, you might as well move on.
