Exclusive Interview with Porn Star Steve Cruz

It was the first time we had sex. I met him on MySpace in March of '08. We had many a long conversation leading up to our face-to-face meeting. Then I directed him (with Leif Gobo) in Red Light. We instantly connected, and he relocated his life to the west coast so we could be together.

I’ve read several blog posts by porn stars lamenting their inability to have a fulfilling love life. How do you two make it work?

We have a strong friendship and many shared interests. We're lovers and business partners. The thing that keeps us going is laughter.

Not that I’m insinuating anything, but what are your thoughts on marriage equality?

I deserve the right to a messy California divorce just like every other citizen. Anything less is unconstitutional. It's a civil rights issue I feel strongly about, but for me personally? I think marriage as a concept is archaic, sexist and generally very silly. It holds little interest for me. Real love is so much more.

Aside from the man, who has been your favorite scene partner? Is there anyone you’re still dreaming about working with?

I've had a lot of greats–Francois Sagat, Damien Crosse and Logan McCree.  I'm working on a scene with Ty LeBeouf next.

So you’ve designated Race Cooper as the Grace Jones of the porn world…

Oh no! He earned that all on his own!

Any porn stars who you think are underrated?

Ty LeBeouf is the star of my new movie Dirty! releasing late September (Falcon/Mustang). Because he has this rocking massive ass he gets typecasted as a power bottom. I turned him loose on the set, and he can be a dominant muscle daddy top. He grew his chest hair and is sporting an all over tan. You'll fall in love with the Cajun Stud Pup as a beer-drinking, mud-slinging red neck!

You recently tweeted that “you never get credit for being a good top”. Why do you think so many versatile porn stars get pushed into one category or the other, while others do not?

I don't think every performer gets pushed into a category. I made a name for myself by being this greedy bottom, so it's kind of my own fault. My tweet was very tongue in cheek, but laughter aside… I didn't realize I was a pretty good top until I started directing.

Do you think gay porn has leaned towards hairier models in recent years? If so, what do you think led to this transition?

If so, I'm glad.  I like smooth guys, and I like hairy guys. MEN should be natural.  Leave the shaved pubes for the ladies!  If it's a trend, I hope it continues.

In your time as a porn star, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen on set or at a party?

The scat scene on stage at Berlin's Hustlaball. The dressing room/shower was not connected to the stage but was through the crowded bar and down the stairs. See where I am going with this?

You’ve done a lot of safe-sex advocacy work. How did you feel about the recent Dustin Lance Black bareback photo scandal? Bareback porn in general?

He made a very responsible public apology. I interviewed up-and-coming star Leo Giamani in this month's Unzipped Magazine (July 2009) about his bareback past, and he came to similar conclusion. I think people make mistakes and bad choices. It's part of the human experience. It says a lot about a person when they take a bad situation and try to help others learn from their mistakes.

Random question time! Let's talk about a few things aside from porn. You have such great taste in music. Any suggestions for the MANHUNT Daily Song of Summer?

We hear you're quite the artist. Why haven’t we seen any of your paintings?

I keep a few things personal, I guess? I have them posted on my professional site under my legal name. Maybe I'll put one in a movie some day.
