The Journal of Natural Products just
published a study about the antibiotic effects of molecules called cannabanoids. Primarily, these are substances in marijuana that don’t get you high.
Researchers believe these molecules could be useful in combating ‘superbugs’ that have grown resistant to traditional antibiotics. The most devastating ‘superbug’ is MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) which infects over a million hospital patients a year, and kills 100,000 because there are no effective medications to treat it. Some think these newly discovered molecules in marijuana could be used to create effective antibiotics against the ’superbugs.’
Interestingly, it has been proven that smoking pot weakens overall immunity; however, there are newly isolated substances in the plant that have strong antibacterial properties.
