If you enjoyed Regina Spektor‘s last album Begin to Hope, there’s an extremely high chance that you’ll enjoy her latest project Far. There’s also an extremely high chance that you’ll enjoy it a little less. While Hope was a mind-blowing departure from the melodramatic tone of Soviet Kitsch into fluffy pop territory, Far turns out more of the same with a little less personality.
Complete with a dolphin impression that rivals the stuttering of “Fidelity”, the album’s standout track is “Folding Chair”. It’s nowhere near as memorable as its predecessor, but it still holds its own along other album highlights such as “Wallet”, “Two Birds” and “Dance Anthem of the ’80s”.
Spektor is an acquired taste, and each individual has different biases within their love for her. If you’re a bigger fan of her songs that channel a more playful blend of Tori Amos and The Dresden Dolls, you might want to sit this one out. Baby’s gone too mainstream for another “Chemo Limo”!
