Shakira's She Wolf has already been released in at least twenty-two countries worldwide, but US audiences will have to wait until the end of next month to hear it. Exactly what is Epic Records waiting for? Even though lead single "She Wolf" might not have been the bonafide hit they were aching for, they're holding back on unleashing a perfectly good album.
Sure, fans may be upset that Shakira's venture into electro-pop signals a departure from her familiar Latin pop-rock territory. However, by separating herself from previous projects, she explores an intriguing array of international and electronic flavors. She manages to experiment with her sound without sacrificing her artistic identity. This couldn't be anything but a Shakira album.
Still skeptical? Well, let's take a look at one of the lyrics from "Men In This Town". She sings, "Is there a prince in this fable for a small town girl like me? The good ones are gone or not able and Matt Damon's not meant for me." While that may sound as ridiculous as the lyrics from Mariah Carey's most recent album, there's one big difference–Shakira can actually pull it off.
In fact, she seems like she can pull off pretty much anything. This is evident when Shakira gleefully mimics a horn on the Wyclef Jean collaboration "Spy". It's clear in "Mon Amour" when she spitefully tells an ex-lover that she hopes his hotel toilet doesn't flush. The key to She Wolf isn't necessarily the music itself; it's the quirky antics of the individual singing it. But unfortunately, those eccentricities don't sell records these days…
