An Interview With Killian James: Escorting, Safe Sex, Bottoming & Making The Switch To Porn

I had the pleasure of talking with Killian fresh off of his 2014 Best Bottom win at the Hookies. Find out about what he feels makes him a great escort, his upcoming scene and his strong stance on safe sex.

Hey Killian! Thanks again for making time to speak with us. How are you doing today?

I’m doing great! Just preparing myself for my upcoming shoot, Hustla Pride and other Pride events happening this month in the city.

Nice! I definitely want to hear about the shoot, but what’s Hustla Pride?

It’s an event taking place the Sunday before Pride at a location that hasn’t been announced yet. I’m shooting the promo for it tomorrow.

Oh, that’s the upcoming shoot! I know there’s been a lot of buzz going around the blogs about you potentially shooting a porn scene now that you’re part of Fabscout.

Yes, that is definitely happening within the next couple of weeks as well.

Can you tell us any details about it?

I’ve been sworn to secrecy, but I can tell you this — my scene partner is to die for, and I’ll be saving up my load until the shoot date. It’s going to be extremely hot.

Hey, I’ll take that. I’m already excited! It seems like there’s a really fluid progression between escorting and porn. Was this the natural next step for you?

I really entered into the escorting profession with the intention of not getting in front of the camera. However, throughout the past few months, I’ve met some really amazing people in the industry such as Howard Andrew, Austin and Tyler Wolf, Leo Sweetwood, Boomer Banks… All of a sudden, being a part of the adult entertainment industry seemed natural and something I had to jump into.

By the way, congratulations on your Best Bottom year in this year’s Hookies! How has it been since winning?

Thanks so much! It’s been great. It’s definitely given me the opportunity to be a larger part of the escorting community and get noticed when speaking about important issues.

Tell us how you got started as an escort.

I had a nice fitness business in Chelsea here in the city, but it just wasn’t enough. Life was getting boring and routine, and I found myself not really getting out there into the world like I wanted. Before that, I was an accountant for three years at a consulting firm.

Interesting! An accountant turned escort. You don’t see that every day.

Probably not. I had to believe life had more to offer than sitting at a desk taking commands, then waking up one day and telling myself “I missed out on so much when I was younger”.

Good point. Life is meant to be lived, especially when you’re young. In your Rentboy Talk video, you mentioned that being highly personable makes you a good escort. How do you deal with a client who just comes off as a real asshole?

I let them be an asshole if that’s what they choose to be. Meanwhile, I’d do my job then get paid. Much like when I was an accountant, I’d sit back and watch my boss be a dick, then at the end of the day go on my way. I’m not there to coach anyone on how to act.

Are you very selective in who you work with?

Luckily, I’ve never met someone who I wouldn’t meet again. However, if I did, I wouldn’t have a problem declining an invitation to meet. I profile people before I meet them. I require speaking on the phone beforehand. You can get a very good sense of someone by hearing their voice.

That makes sense. It’s a totally different dimension. There could be some wack-job out there who types like a secretary!

Totally. I’ve declined many potential clients because something just didn’t seem right, or because they were rude and didn’t approach the situation correctly. I like to make it known that I am a professional providing a real service, and I will be treated with respect. In turn, the client will be treated with respect. Without respect, there’s nothing.

Respect— that’s the name of the game. How do you keep calm from client to client?

I block out everything from the outside world and tell myself that nothing else matters right now than who I’m with and the service I’m providing.

Let’s talk about life outside of the bedroom. What’s a typical day like for Killian James?

I’m a big believer that the early bird catches the worm. I like to wake up at around 7:30 or 8 in the morning, have breakfast and watch Good Morning America. Then I head to the gym for round one of two. I run my daily errands, then head back to the gym. I go to bed at a very normal hour, around 11:30 PM. Ninety-nine percent of my work takes place between noon and 10:00 p.m.

Do you have any hobbies that you like to do in your spare time?

I wish I had time for a hobby! I’d say because of the industries I’m in, being physically fit is the most important thing to me right now. I spend about three hours a day in the gym.

It definitely sounds like you’re driven and have your head on straight about what you want out of life. Who has offered you the most useful career advice?

I’d say definitely Howard, Austin and my mom. Also, Sean Van Sant at Rentboy is amazing. He’s someone I’ll go to if I need advice on something.

What was that advice?

Basically, the advice can be summed up like this: never lose sight as to why you’re doing what you’re doing and have a long term plan. Which I do.

Where do you see yourself in the next few years? Maybe an award-winning porn star too?

Hopefully, I’ll be picking an award or two along the way, but I definitely still see myself escorting as well as investing in vacation rentals, and eventually opening up an LGBT-catered bed and breakfast or boutique hotel.

I can see it now—“Fun and Games with Killian James”. Hotels from Manhattan to Mykonos.

That’d be a hoot!

Where do you feel most at home?

Right where I am now in my apartment on the Upper East Side. It’s quiet, yet excitement is a 10 minute cab ride away.

Are you originally from NYC? If you had to live somewhere else, where would it be?

I’m from Port Chester, NY, which is in Westchester County. I’d choose to live in Los Angeles. It’s warm, sunny, and everyone’s always super friendly when I go there.

L.A.’s a good choice, especially when your porn career picks up. I’m sure they’d love to have you out there!

Of the people you spend time with, who brings out your best qualities?

I’d have to say my good friend Jared. We always have a BLAST together. No drama! Us boys just want to have fun.

Now I have to ask this question. As a blue ribbon, award-winning bottom, tell us how you prepare. Any tips out there for guys who are looking to bottom?

My favorite question! You have to make sure you’re clean, obviously, and you have to want it. If you don’t want it, it’ll be very obvious, and no one will have a good time.

So the passion kinda loosens everything up. I understand that.

Yes, exactly.

Earlier you mentioned that with your Hookies win, you want to talk about more important issues. One of those issues is safe sex. Talk to us about that.

I ran into a semi well-known porn star about a week ago, and we were talking and discussing IML, which he attended. I made a comment like “I hope you were safe,” and I got a rather disconcerting response—something to the effect of him being on Truvada and that he had full-on unsafe sex, so he thought he was okay.

I can’t wrap my head around that. People are going out and intentionally being risky, thinking it’s okay because they are on a pill.

If it were 2020, I think there would be more scientific support and that the public would embrace PrEP more, but it’s so new and not many people are on it. I think at this point it’s still irresponsible to not use condoms.

A lot of porn these days almost seems to glorify bareback sex. Is that something you’re concerned about as you enter this industry as a performer?

Yes and no. I’m not concerned for myself, because at this point in my career, I refuse to participate and glorify that. However, I genuinely care about the LGBT community. I’m concerned that people will see their favorite stars doing bareback and will want to copy them.

That’s true. There’s still the ongoing debate on if the porn industry should be more responsible, because people in real life are taking those cues without knowing that porn happens in a controlled environment.

I think people know that it’s controlled. However, let’s be real. During a drug-fueled orgy in someone’s apartment, I wouldn’t want to be a catalyst in someone choosing not to use a condom if they were watching me in a scene.

Well, we’re definitely seeing more porn stars now creating their own porn companies to control the image they want out there.

Sure, I think that’s the best way to go, if you want to control your own image. However, there are other ways to control it. Stand your ground about what you’re comfortable with, and if you don’t want to be seen doing something, then just don’t do it.

Once again, respect is the name of the game. Particularly self-respect.

Absolutely. There are things I’d never do in my personal life or on film. I think people just get pressured, and that’s not good for anyone
