Aural Only: Nicki Minaj

Say what you will about Nicki Minaj. Even folks who like hip-hop can’t universally agree on her place within the rap soundscape. Is she the fresh new voice who’s destined to put female rappers back on the map? Or is she just a blatantly uncreative emcee who relies heavily on theatrics and crazy-ass wigs?

Feel free to debate on that topic, but it won’t change the fact that Minaj’s Annie Lennox-sampling “Your Love” has become the first single by a solo female artist to top Billboard’s Rap Songs charts in over seven years. Yes, it’s been seven years since a lady rapper has single-handedly dominated those charts, with Missy Elliott‘s “Work It” being the last single to take the number one spot.

Of course, the most hilarious aspect of this all? The last female rapper to achieve this feat as a whole was none other than Minaj’s most vocal critic, Lil Kim. Her victory with “Magic Stick” is less noteworthy, given that it was a collaboration with a male vocalist. And even if you count Kim’s single, it’s still been six years since this has been accomplished! Congrats to Nicki, eh?

If you made it this far, be sure to head over to the blog for M.I.A.’s label Neet Recordings. She posted a remix of her new song “Teqkilla” which features a guest verse by Minaj. It may not make the original song sound any less crappy (sorry Maya), but it’ll surely satisfy your craving for Nicki.

  1. This bitch stole my boyfriend.

He pays more attention to her on Google than he does me.

    Grrrrrrr!!!

  2. I can’t get into this chicks music. I try but she’s just not a rapper, she’s a gimmick. A very popular gimmick.

  3. Mixed feelings on her; she’s different (sans the lil kim “Crush on You” wigs that she insists on wearing), she’s a business woman, and she really seems to dig her fans…

That being said her lyrics sound curiously similar to Drake’s and Lil Wayne’s. She also plays like she’s bisexual and makes flirty comments about sexual acts with women. She’s Caribbean, she knows that stuff doesn’t fly in Caribbean culture…

Also she talks down about both men and women. She says that the BET award she won is about “sisterhood” and all that crap yet she calls women bitches in every other song?

She also talks about grown men as if they’re children or somehow beneath her. “I think i love him, i love him just like i raised him. when he call me mama (lil mama) i call him baby”. Who says something like that about a man that she is in an equal/mutually respectful relationship with?

Think I’ll stick with Foxy Brown and Remy Ma…
