Aural Only: Rihanna

Screw waiting for a music video! Rihanna‘s latest single “What’s My Name?” just hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, which means we’ll be adding it to tomorrow’s Weekly Top Ten countdown. The song finds the Bajan pop princess bringing back a dash of island flavor, as she returns to the warmer sound that established her career.

Not to mention, hip-hop artist Drake drops in for a guest verse! Even though he makes a hot reference to sixty-nining, it’s Ms. Only Girl who really owns the sexiness on this track. But is that really a surprise? This bitch could sing the phone book in her robotic vocals, and we’d still want to have sex in the middle of a dancefloor. It doesn’t even make sense!

UPDATE: The official video has been added to this post! Um, does anyone else want to “spill some milk” with Drake?

  1. Blah. I can’t believe this song went to No. 1 when Only Girl didn’t. This song barely sounds like a top ten. But it’s getting really obvious and predictable what will and won’t go to No. 1 – just feature a popular rapper at the time and it’ll be huge for that alone.

  2. What a piece of s**t. I can’t believe the horrible choices of music today.. This song sucks. This hit #1? Auto Tune anyone?

    Moving on.

  3. I agree. I thought it would have been at least interesting.

Sad that Rihanna is just doing what the people in charge are telling her to do.

  4. Rihanna is doing what she’s told because she doesn’t have any control of her music, her decisions or her life. The song is OK, but forgettable. Only a remix can make it better to my ears. I still believe Only Girl In the World is more deserving of a #1. And for the sounds of her new album, we were misled and it’s not the dance machine that we thought it would be.

  5. That’s what happens when digital sales count more that radio airplay in the charts. The song is awful. What’s with all these girls now releasing two singles at the same time? It’s hard to keep track of what they are promoting. The music industry just gets more pathetic year after year.

  6. pretty good. certainly a grower.
i like how rihanna takes ‘bridges’ to new levels on her last album.
best part of ‘only girl’? = the bridge..
best part in this = the bridge..

pity ‘only girl’ didnt make it to number 1.
it made it to no.1 in the uk though..

  7. Haven’t liked anything she has released lately…but we know what she’s capable of so just a matter of time.

  8. I hate the Drake part in the song – it totally sucks.

Rihanna’s lines are good and quite catchy. It’s just too bad Drake had to ruin it with his pointless and borderline loser rapping.

  9. TRASHY! I picture the video with her as a prostitute on a corner, or a Dancer at a titty bar. Too bad for her she could be much more.

  10. Well, the video premiered last night online and on MTV. I still have to see what they came up with.

  11. Fuck the haters this song is AMAZING…melodic, playful & definitely sensual in everyway…RiRi gives it to you especially during the bridge or “climax” of the song…it’s well done & a very beautiful song!!!
