Aural Only: Selena Gomez

There are so many reasons that I shouldn’t love Selena Gomez. After all, the eighteen year-old star is a product of the Disney machine, appearing on a television show aimed towards the tween demographic. Yet much like her predecessors–Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus–her pop hits seem more appropriate for a gay club than a tenth birthday party.

Just take a listen to her latest release “A Year Without Rain”. Despite the fact that it’s mindless rubbish, there’s something incredibly addictive about this song. You can already imagine heading into a small gay bar in the boondocks and catching grown men waving their hands to this.  Should we be ashamed? Or is it better to own your guilty pleasures?

  1. I like this record and look forward to the remixes, which I’d bet will be way better. And I’d also bet that in two or three more years Miss Gomez will be a sultry, gorgeous young woman and a huge star. She already looks pretty good here.

  2. Sorry, not feeling this. Not even as a guilty pleasure, of which I’d proudly have many. It sounds cheap, like all the Disney trash, and processed. RUBBISH.

  3. I love this song!
I think Selena and her team are marketing and producing the right kind of music. They know how to make her last, target the gay crowd.

I’m really excited for the remixs of this song.

  4. out of all the disney stars i love Selena Gomez Shes awesome I love everything about her and shes not a slut… yet

  5. I’m glad I read this blog entry and I’m glad I watched the video cuz she’s cute, but isn’t it a little arrogant to contradict yourself by calling it mindless rubbish while you rant and rave about how much you like it? You don’t have to apologize, it’s just pop music, plus who doesn’t love a good beat?!! Were you expecting her to be a good singer?

  6. Target the crowd to make her last? Judging by the weekly top 10, that would be THE WORST way to last! Look how quickly everyone has turned on Gaga!!! Fickle is the nicest word to use! Guilty as charged, btw.

  7. Ok, you’re forgiven for George Lewis, Jr. Great song, hot video, her car full of her gay bffs. Weekly Top Ten, please?

  8. just because it’s catchy doesn’t mean it’s good. i mean, i get that stupid fucking McDonald’s jingle stuck in my head that doesn’t mean i want to listen to it. but, i guess anymore all it takes to be a gay idol is some catchy lyrics, a good beat and a great marketing team. i thought as a community we used to CREATE and not sit by and get force fed crap by a corporate marketing team. granted, we’ve always loved camp and kitsch but we also knew that it was pop trash. we used to have a sense of irony but now we just like bad things because we think they are actually good.

  9. I enjoy the song. Look at what Disney has given us as of late: Miley Cyrus and every other random no-talent Disney Channel star with an album. She has a good voice and is making good music. Give me more of here. Retire Miley!

  10. This is why I like her more than that other thing Disney’s sent out…she actually sounds nice when she sings, she’s adorable too.

  11. Between all the grunts and gasps (porn anyone?), I think I heard a tune. She’s pretty and the guy is hot, but that’s about it for me.

  12. I liked the song, and I have come to like Selena Gomez, from reading her various interviews and catching little bits and pieces of her here and there. Of course, it’s Disney, and it’s packaged, but great things can come out of those marketing machines of that type, take Kelly Clarkson from American Idol for example. Ultimately, the thing that will make her last is whether or not she has the talent, drive, and right people behind her. For now, lets just enjoy the good music while it’s coming! Not that I’m a fan of dance mixes or anything, but I already forsee a dangerously fabulous remix of this on the horizon! Who’s dancing with me in the club!

  13. Yo Dewitt, you’re slackin on the whole gay thing. Rihanna has a new song out. It premiered yesterday on Ryan Seacrest’s show. It’s amazing. You should do an Aural Only on the song. I’ve got a copy if you need one. It’s delicious.
