Actors don’t come much more versatile than Colin Farrell. From blockbusters like Fantastic Beasts and his upcoming role as Penguin in The Batman, to comedic turns in films like In Bruges, to niche indies like The Lobster, the Irish actor’s career spans almost every genre. With new film After Yang, he takes on cerebral sci-fi, in a tale about androids, family and what it means to be human. Watch the trailer now:
After Yang centres around Jake (Farrell), his wife Kyra (Queen & Slim’s Jodie Turner-Smith), their adopted daughter Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) and their robotic companion Yang (Justin H. Min). In this particular future, androids like Yang are able to experience human emotions and memories, and can be bought as house helpers. When Yang breaks down, Jake’s search for replacement parts to repair him leads to him witnessing the robot’s memories, and he reconnects with his family in the process. Expect moving montages, an ethereal aesthetic, and attempts to tackle big questions about the meaning of life.
It’s directed by the monosyllabically-named Kogonada, whose recent work includes the 2017 John Cho-starring drama Columbus. After going down a storm at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, this soulful sliver of sci-fi drama was picked up by distributing powerhouse A24, and is set for release in US theatres and on Showtime on 4 March. There’s no UK release confirmed as of yet, but here’s hoping we get to see it later this year.
