Grammy and Emmy winner Donald Glover is opening up about his sexuality — and how he doesn’t feel the need to label it.
In conversation with I May Destroy You creator and star Michael Coel for the latest issue of British GQ, the multi-hyphenate entertainer talked to the critically-acclaimed screenwriter and actress about a variety of topics, the likes of which included how terminology and language change between generations and how younger people seem to be fascinated (and “stuck”) when it comes to the use of labels to help find others who are like them.
“Millennials – and your show does a good job of this – [are] showing how we’re kind of stuck, in a weird way,” Donald told Coel. “Why do people online get stuck in that narrative? Because it’s safe. And you know what you’re going to get if you follow in the steps somebody else took. There is security to being identified.”
He continued:
“‘I’m a straight white male’ or ‘I’m a gay Asian dancer’ – you can find community easily and safely. Instead of being like, ‘Man, I really don’t know…’ most of my college years were me being like, ‘I don’t know what I like.’ I had friends who asked, ‘Are you gay?’ And I’d be like, ‘I sort of feel like I am because I love this community.’ You know? But maybe I’m not? And I always was trying to figure out ‘Am I weird for not wanting to label it?'”
Though he isn’t one to ascribe a label to his own sexuality, he’s totally cool with specific sexualities being attributed to the characters he plays on-screen. After playing iconic space smuggler Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, the “This Is America” singer has openly said he loves the idea of Lando being pansexual, a rumor that had been floating around the Star Wars fandom for years before it was affirmed by screenwriters Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan.
“How can you not be pansexual in space?” Donald said in a 2018 interview with SiriusXM.
“There are so many things to have sex with,” he continued. “I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody. I mean, yeah, whatever. It just didn’t seem that weird to me ‘cause I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of like, the door is open! It’s like, no, only guys or girls. No, it’s anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have a good time out here.”
Though it hasn’t been 100 percent confirmed yet, there are major rumors circulating that Donald will be reprising the role of a pansexual Lando in the character’s very own upcoming Disney+ series, which is something we (as both Childish Gambino and Star Wars super stans) would absolutely LOVE to see.
