The Fine Art of Cruising is a 1975 guide on how to navigate the world before Manhunt made it remarkably easy to get a dick in your mouth. If you didn’t happen to live through that period, this is worth reading to see how much gay culture’s evolved since the 1970s (or, alternatively, how much it hasn’t evolved in certain ways). It’s like a history lesson you can read without your pants on.
Some of this will make you laugh, some of this will make you realize how much you take for granted, and considering the amount of dirty pictures scattered throughout the text, some of this will inevitably turn you on. Kudos go out to Retro Men Plus for unearthing this gem! And if any of you fine men reading this have memories from the days of cruising, we’d love to hear about them in the comments section.

Interesting that there was only one pic that showed penetration (but even that pic is questionable). Cruising is a lost art. The current generation has great difficulty appreciating what really goes into cruising. As my massage therapist says, “why go out when you can order in?”. Of course, the energy, wiles, and skill required to cruise varied widely based on a number of factors such as where one lived, one’s age, and even if one was out. I thought it interesting the article failed to mention the ‘Shopping Cruise’. The Safeway @ Market & Church was, and remains, one of the cruisiest spots in The Castro. And don’t even get me started about cruising in the men’s department at a department store.
Had I not been a terrified teenager in the 70’s, these tips may have worked. I would probably also nit be alive, today.

The 70’s was a good decade because I was there and I graduated from high school in 1973.
It’s true, back then you wouldn’t see very many penetration pics in the magazines.
