Gay Family Ad Rejected by NFL

An ad produced by GetToKnowUsFirst.org featuring a gay family was rejected by NBC affiliate KNBC during the Super Bowl programming. According to KNBC, the legal department of the NFL found it to be in the 'advocacy' category, which they claim they do not allow. However, ads for TobaccoFreeCA.org and DontBeAnAsterisk.org were aired, and are clearly advocacy public service announcements (PSAs).

Check out their various ads above (the rejected ad is the first one), and let me know what you think about KNBC and the NFL's decision.

GetToKnowUsFirst.org details some of the things you can do to help on their website.

  1. Hmmmm. I have mixed feelings about these ads. The jump from getting to know us first and closing the ad by asking for support with gay marriage is simply too big of a leap for most Americans to accept. The public needs small doses, perhaps beginning with the getting to know us first part. Educate first, and help the public understand where we are coming from, just as the ads depict. I would leave out the marriage part for now. It’s simply not a good time, especially in light of the negative publicity of the guerilla tactics used when Prop 8 didn’t swing our way.
I wish our community would quit cramming gay marriage down America’s throats, and instead, try to soften public opinion by educating the public first. Marriage will come, but I hope it’s by the hands of a majority of tolerant Americans, and not by some cry-baby extreme group.

  2. at this point who cares? There are more importnat things to focus on right now. Thw war, The homeless, Babies Dieing, The elderly and medical care. It seems gays will spend time and money, effort fighting over a silly commercial showing two men or two woman as a family. When if they spent that effort trying to help the homeless, feed the needy, help the elderly would be more productive then focusing on this.

  3. Oh, How I love self hating homos like the two commenters above! I guess some people are too lazy to fight two fights at once, right dale?

  4. Who said anything about being too lazy to fight? I believe there are better ways on fighting for gay marriage than to ambush the country, and forcing Americans to accept it. These commercials are very good, and would like to see them air, period. Who cares about the Super Bowl time slot…that seemed too much like a publicity stunt.
The problem I have with extreme groups representing a cause I believe in is that they do a great disservice for those of us who believe in dialogue and education. But no, these groups fight hate with hate with this “fuck you” mantra. Sure, these guys don’t care what the rest of the country thinks. Wah wah wah. I said it before, we will have that right, but not by the hands of radicals.

  5. hmmm, Dale did, and thats who I referenced with that comment… youre points I don’t disagree with so much, though I don’t see how this group is at all radical…

  6. Oh, I see. You pointed out the two commenters above you as self hating homos, but singled out Dale on the lazy fighter point. Got it. I should feel much better?
To clarify, I was not referring to this particular group that produced these commercials as radicals. I do find the message somewhat disjointed, though. I was also directing my points at those hate (yep, I said it) groups within our community that claim to be doing all of us a favor by showing the rest of America that we can hate as much as the conservatives. I would like to think that we’d take the high road when it comes to diplomacy and tolerance. I am certainly not a pushover, but I would rather place my efforts towards building bridges than driving wedges between groups. And no, I won’t hold your hand….lol.
