This classic clip from Curb Your Enthusiasm popped up on my Facebook wall this morning, and this is so National Coming Out Day perfect!
Normally Larry David annoys the shit out of me, but the little flamboyant kid is the balls. If he wants to love his sewing machine, his mom should shut her yap and let him.
(Be forewarned, there is a running Hitler joke. Cuz’ National Coming Out Day is all about Hitler jokes, right?)
– J. Harvey
To watch, Follow the JUMP:
Well, I guess N.C.O.D. equates to National Screaming Queen Day for you Mr. Harvey. Too bad, I think you’re missing the boat a little on this. Maybe a different bend will appear next year.
It appears as though, once more, you missed the mark … I’m sorry.
OMG TIMBER41 for a straight Jew Boy I think he did okay on this one besides IT’S A FUCKING COMEDY stereo types abound
I thought this was hilarious! Stereotypes can be funny if the tone is right, like it is here. Theyre not trying to be derogatory or hurtful or anything, theyre just trying to make people laugh and forget about the problems that might be plagueing their lives.
I just thought it was nice to celebrate incipient gayness. Jeesh.
Oh, my f’ing CHRIST! Just so we’re clear: It’s screaming queens who were responsible for leading the Stonewall riots, and most radical gay organizations in the 70s, and the protests that caused the APA to think about removing homosexuality from the DSM, as well as the inspiration behind the fabulousness that was ACT-UP and Queer Nation. And, if you’ve ever seen the footage, Harvey Milk was about as nelly as they come.
It’s the flamboyant ones who get noticed, and getting noticed changes things. Thanks for the laugh, J. Harvey, and the implicit nod to why some of us love being queer.
It would be nice, if “incipient gayness” wasn’t the automatic default for ANYTHING gay related. It amounts to the same response a news outlet gives to a gay pride event and ONLY shows drag queens and ass-less chaps (both things I love, but aren’t the ONLY part of my “gayness”) because that’s what the Gay do , right?
Today has potential to be a very positive, life changing event for some guys. Heck, maybe some guy whose been using Manhunt to smoke stick on the DL will have an epiphany and kick the door down. I’m saying there are other ways of celebrating and encouraging that action that don’t have to fall into the SSSSSSuper Gay! catagory.
A post about the soldier in Germany who has been video blogging on youtube about being gay in the military (Are You Surprised is the name) who not only revealed his full identity the day DADT was retired, but came out live over the phone to his dad in Alabama would be a great way to acknowledge the day and maybe make someone else know it’s ok for them to do one of the hardest things they’ll ever face in their lives. it was one of the most pride inspiring things I’ve seen and I’ve been out for 30 years.
Just saying….
Yes, the clip is from a comedy. What does IT have to do with National Coming Out Day? And if a mincing stereotype of a poor boy who would be tormented and beaten by his peers in real life if he acted like that is supposed to make someone feel good about coming out, I don’t see the conection
You’re absolutely right to point out the full range of people who identify as gay. At the same time, I remember watching that soldier in Germany video (which was very touching) and thinking, “Well, he’s white, young, very classically handsome . . . and everything’s turning out pretty well.” What about all the little sissy boys watching Project Runway and getting hell from their siblings and parents? What about all the fat queens and queers of color? What about all the people who are brave and courageous enough to come out (or, who never have the option of being “in”) who don’t get warm, loving embraces? Aren’t we responsible for giving them some sense of courage and community as well? (And if the Manhunt blog pages are any indication, controlling your lisp, conforming your gender, and looking as close to white as you can is about as “out” as most folk would like you to be.)
So it’s the soldiers fault he’s white?
The post is about National Coming Out Day. You ask “what about all the people who are brave and courageous enough to come out and don’t get warm, loving embraces?” What about the clip is addressing them? Or ANYONE’s coming out? I am the first to poke fun at myself and out “community”, but there is nothing about the stereotype of “Greg” that I find funny, or encouraging to anyone coming out. It is a totally affected straight version of the poor gay kid, and makes gays the butt of the joke while trying to seem like it’s all on the inside with gays.
You ask if we are responsible for giving all the “outsiders” in gay culture a sense of courage and community? Absolutely. I’m just wondering where you get that message from tthe 2 posts here for N.C.O.D.?
Good concept but a bit tactless.
Bravo!
What I got out of that young soldier video was a Father telling his son that he loves him don’t matter what 🙂 . Kinkago I know this my sound surprising but acceptance, courage, community and most of all love is not just limited 2 in shape good looking white guys .
Hardly never watch Curb your enthusiasms but in this episode Larry was embracing this kid the boy wanted a sew machine and Larry got him one . I would agree that little boy was over top flamboyant but Larry treatment of Greg (I think that was his name ) is what tolerance is all about . BTW J. Harvey Timber41 had it so right when he said U missed the boat The purpose of the Hitler jokes was 2 show people the uglyness of hatred and who is a better example of the uglyness of hatred than ADOLPH HITLER ? National Coming Out Day is as much about love & acceptance as is coming out …
It’s A Fucking Joke
Get lives people…. it’s fucking hilarious, I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself when she turned over the swastika and saw the looks of mortification…. there’s so much irony here it makes my heart sing !
Jesus Christ people, lighten the fuck up.
Mohammed, Buddha, Hare Krishna….. Why do you all have to use Jesus Christ’ name in your posts????? Leave Him out of it. I’m sure you all don’t believe in Him, so why use His name? You can make your point just as well without bringing Him into it.
:-D.
that little kid.
“. . .a bad man¿”
“…oh my god¡”
so freakin’ funny (with the exception of the hitler/nazi parts, which i’m going to overlook).
a little perfect fruit, already, at 6.
and his reaction at receiving a sewing machine: yeah, he’s going to be a future hell-raiser.
(at the very least.)
