Some of this advice sounds reasonable at first blush, but people are what they are. Trying a few dates to see if and when the time is right sounds like it wouldn’t work in most cases. Psychological confliction may make Jay reluctant or unwilling to invest that much time in a relationship from which he just wants experimentation … and … it is probably unfair to ask someone to spend that much of his own time particularly as — after several dates — there may be a desire or expectation for something more than NSA. This guy can be upfront from the beginning about what he wants, but on social media I would say that this is not likely to attract much interest from empathetic partners.
This is going to, admittedly, sound cynical but men are what they are. If Jay is a hot guy then, in our culture, this affords him many opportunities to control the situation … and that is his best path forward. If he’s nice looking but doesn’t conform to stereotypical standards of male beauty in our culture, then I’m not sure what the best advice is, frankly. If Jay is not a hot guy, then he needs to try and form realistic expectations and try to take it from there if he wants to preserve his own standards.

I was like Jay. When I was in my mid 30s, I admitted to myself that I had a sexual attraction to other men. This was 1997. The approach that worked for me was to visit San Francisco. Yes, I know that’s very cliché, but I met a great older man at a café in the Castro. Bill was 64, in great shape and just the nicest man. He showed me around the city for a couple of days. Yeah, what gives. Colby is smart, engaging, and comes off as both rather sensitive and very intelligent. He’s puckish at the right times. I find his advice to be pretty on target most of the time.
