Iowa Parents Use Son’s HIV Death to Attack Gays

After gay marriage was legalized in Iowa, opponents have stooped to some pretty low tactics to turn the tide. The latest shameful tactic used was the exploitation of a dead Gay man's memory by his own parents to further their political agenda! Does it get any more low than that!?

A guest column in the Des Moines Register by Karl and Judy Schowengerdt not only claims that his son was "recruited" by fellow homosexuals, but he that was abandoned by the community once he became positive. I for one know at least one LGBT centric HIV/AIDS non-profit in Iowa.

At a certain point I almost felt bad for the couple, until they made it clear they are using this tragedy for their own agenda, even saying "you the taxpayer paid for more than $250,000 in medical bills for this one AIDS patient."

The video above also shows the parents telling their story, and you can read the article here. I think it's pretty disgusting, what do you guys think?

  1. His parents stated that he told no one when he found out his hiv status and then at the end blamed the gay community because no one cared for him. What a miserable low life family that man had.

  2. Ok well, I have to agree with the man when he says that a lot of people are almost groomed into leading the gay life. It seems to me that a lot of men who are really unconfident with women or have low self esteems find closure in the gay community as so many of us are so opening ad welcoming. Which I think is a great thing. However, I feel that a lot of gay men and women are so happy to groom new meat (as the man says) in without taking the time to consider how it could effect the person’s life. I honestly think there are a lot of men and especially women who have felt so comfortable within the gay community that they have mistaken that feeling of comfort for sexual and romantic feelings for their same sex. Which I think is wrong. Now don’t get me wrong. I am very proud of who I am. I have a wonderful life. But I do feel that we as a community need to start understanding that it IS an alternative lifestyle and that it is not something that should be entered in to without deep and considerate thought. I feel that (and I dont mean to stereotype) gay men and women are so proud that they forget that it’s a lot harder to lead a normal life and it can be quite difficult emotionally at times. We need to stop this “grooming” and stop pretending that we are seen as equals. Because we’re not.

  3. CONSIDER THE SOURCE…IOWA STUPID. IF IT’S NOT ABOUT THEM, THEY BLAME EVERYONE ELSE. HE WAS BORN GAY AND NOT “RECRUITED” BY OTHERS. THEY JUST CAN’T CUT THE CORD AND LET THEIR SON CHOOSE HIS OWN LIFESTYLE WHERE HE WAS MUCH HAPPIER THAN IN THE STILTED, PROVINCIAL, COLLOQUIAL “IOWA STUBBORN” IGNORANCE!

  4. I have never been so angry at anyone in my life, how terrible to use your son’s death from AIDS to push an anti-gay marriage agenda. As we all know it is IMPOSSIBLE for heterosexual people to get AIDS or HIV. It’s not a cult and it is as natural as being straight. As for the person who posted the ludicrous paragraph before me, I would love for you to come and preach your sermon directly to my or any other gay man’s face… How could you say anything so close minded and offensive? I would love to hear the previous poster and those ignorant people from the video’s view on African American freedom… I suppose all of you support slavery as well? Or maybe we should take woman’s rights away, or force Jewish people back into concentration camps?? I bet if those people would have said any of those things in the video, it wouldn’t have been so acceptable.

  5. his parents should be ashamed of themselves and not of there son and his life. They need to open there minds and hearts in order to gain insight and healing about the world and reality. No one made there son gay

  6. It’s so sad that these two people can’t understand that the world does not follow only one viewpoint, like scriptures from a book. Remember, this same “book” also said it was permissable to own slaves, beat your wife and children and put someone’s eye out if they offended you. It’s been said that love conquers all, but apparently not when it comes to bigotry, intolerance and homophobia.

  7. wait…their son wasnt married…what does this have to do with gay marriage? It has to do with homosexuality in general. this is terrible. I really hate seeing things like this. It is really upsetting. I really need to get a thicker skin i suppose, but this is really upsetting. I really hope most of society would view this video as almost a parody perhaps. If this video is true, i hope one day his parents will come to their senses, and get peace. and perhaps ask their god for forgivness.

  8. What..did someone really post those comments..I mean i dont know about anyone else, but i knew i was “gay” around 11. thats before i even knew what it meant, what it was, anything. No one told me anything about homosexuality growing up, until aroud middle school when all you hear is how bad, gross, sick, wrong, sinful it is…if that made me gay then wow, i am pretty stupid. come on people. we were gay from the time we first started getting erotic thoughts. my mom said she knew i was gay at the age of 2. when id run around with a towel on my head to pretend i had long hair. I WAS 2!! However i believ ethat was more past life related, than sexuality related.
