Is HRC Delaying Action on DADT?

Joe Solmonese, HRC

We've written about Don't Ask, Don't Tell a few times now, and if one thing is clear is that the policy just seems down right dumb. With heroic people like Dan Choi and Victor Fehrenbach being fired just for being gay, it's no surprise that a majority of Americans support the repeal of the policy.

That's why it may surprise some that reports have come out that the Human Rights Campaign is pushing lawmakers to delay action on DADT until next year. The Daily Beast is reporting that HRC made deals to push other priorities like a Hate Crimes Bill and the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

HRC denies the charges, and calls the story "an outright lie… recklessly irresponsible."

  1. This was rumored weeks ago … but yesterday Michelangelo Signorile interviewed Joe Solmonese on his Sirius/XM radio show, and asked straight out if HRC was asking the White House to prioritize some gay issues over others. The interview is all posted in MS’s blog: http://www.signorile.com/.
Furthermore, we need to realize that some legislation was already in mature stages, and other things had not been through congressional committees.

  2. I wouldn’t be surprised. The HRC pulled a slightly similar stunt awhile ago when they threw transgender people under the bus to get protections for GLB people. I don’t trust their motives as much anymore.
