Adaptations of Jo Nesbo’s novels tend to be a little hit or miss, but Jake Gyllenhaal has put together a powerhouse producing team to ensure that The Son, which will appear on HBO, works. He has old collaborator Denis Villeneuve plus Westworld duo Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy involved.
Lenore Zion, who has worked on series including Billions and Ray Donovan, will actually run the show, which is a tale of vengeance set amid Oslo’s brutal hierarchy of corruption. The story follows Sonny Lofthus, an escaped convict: an opioid addict who can’t recall his past, on the run from the law toward an unknown truth.
Gyllenhaal nabbed the rights for his Nine Stories production company back in 2016 and has been trying to develop it ever since. He considered a film, but eventually decided alongside producing partner Riva Marker that it would work better as a series.
HBO has now obliged, handing down a series order, which is hardly a surprise given everyone involved. Now they just have to make the thing…
