Can we stop bitching and moaning about how there are no talented, openly gay musicians out there? To put this issue to rest, I made a list of the handful that were featured on Manhunt Daily within the past year. While they may not all be your cup of tea, each of them are making art in their own special way:
Bright Light Bright Light, DeShawn Timothy, Drake Jensen, Woodpigeon, Garçon Garçon, Aiden James, Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear, Big Dipper, Matt Zarley, Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend, Nakia Reynoso, Rufus Wainwright, Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys, Will Young, Michael Stipe of R.E.M. (sort of), Scissor Sisters (Jake Shear’s butt is particularly gay and open about it), Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields, Perfume Genius… Shall I go on?
(Hell, even Adam Lambert‘s latest album wasn’t as bad as the singles he released. There may have even been a few songs that were *gasp* actually good!)
We can also add singer-songwriter Jay Brannan to that list (as well as a few other obvious omissions). Yesterday, the singer-songwriter released his music video for “Rob Me Blind”, the title track off his most recent album, and it’s a beautifully-arranged, sincere effort that some of you are sure to enjoy.
Also? He looks good naked.

I’ve loved him for a very long time. I’ve seen him in concert twice and he’s a really great guy. But this video much just be the single greatest thing ever. Happy to see it making its way around the net!

I’ve been following Jay Brannan’s work since I first saw him in the movie “Shortbus”. He’s a talented and sensitive singer/songwriter who deserves more attention.

There’s also the Brit Pop stars Dan Gillespie Sells of The Feeling who is openly gay, and Mika who declines to be labeled but likes men as well as women. Their music may not be your taste, but their talents are unassailable. Both men have great vocal ranges (particularly Mika) and have excellent musical ears.

As someone who’s followed him on Facebook for the past couple of years, I feel very comfortable in saying that this isn’t even true. Maybe it all boils down to perception, but mostly I find him cute, witty, engaging, and actually *willing to interact with fans* which so many stars aren’t. Different strokes, I guess.
I wish there was a thing on here to showcase amateur gay singers, but either way Jay is amazing!!!
