JoJo instantaneously shed her former teen-pop affiliations on “Marvin’s Room“. In her own flipped rendition of the moody Drake single, the “Leave (Get Out)” singer tackles some very intense emotions and some very adult lyrics like, “Fuck that new girl that’s been in your bed, and when you’re in her I know I’m in your head”…
Unfortunately, grown-up JoJo has yet to find a place in the modern R&B or pop market. Her 2011 single “Disaster” failed to catch on with Top 40 radio stations, and the sexy R&B followup “Demonstrate” suffered a similar fate due to lack of proper promotion.
Fortunately, as with the case of Ciara and other “How are you still around?” artists, there are enough people in the industry who still believe JoJo has star potential (or at the very least, she possesses the talent to make damn good music). Sure, the world might end before her third album gets released, but she’ll continues to truck along like a trooper.
“We Get By” is the first single off her new mixtape Agápē, which is set to make its debut next month. I’m more impressed with it than I should be—especially since ninety percent of the appeal rests in production—yet it still makes me wonder if JoJo still has a chance in this big, cruel world… Perhaps, perhaps.
