Singer-songwriter Victoria Hesketh, better known to the world as Little Boots, has made deliriously wonderful electro-pop singles since 2009, when she released the completely amazing triumverate of “New In Town“, “Remedy” and “Earthquake“. If you read music blog,s she is probably a household name and you are tired of hearing of her. If you don’t read music blogs, you may have never heard her name, or her songs, at all before. (The internet is funny that way.) Although maybe you saw her perform at the Folsom Street Fair last September? She did that, apparently, or at least according to her Wikipedia entry.
“Motorway,” off her forthcoming second album, is very, very good and it’s available as a free download from her website now. I only heard it for the first time less than twenty-four hours ago, and I might already be ready to declare it my favorite song of 2013 so far. In a serious way, too, and not in a hype-y blog enthusiasm way. It’s so good! I love songs that are neither fast nor slow.
Channeling Saint Etienne—the greatest band ever if you are an Anglophile pop nerd and someone whose name you probably haven’t heard since 1993 if you’re not—”Motorway” is slow and sexy and damn if it doesn’t make me want to tear the clothing off the nearest person to me and make sexy, sexy love. (NB: The nearest person to me right now is a female intern and so I’m not going to really do that right now for at least two reasons. Probably more reasons than that, actually.)
Nocturnes, which features the excellent slow-builder “Shake“, will be out in May. I will be dancing in my seat until then.
