Albania‘s prime minister, Sali Berisha, has proposed that the country legalize gay marriage, saying that it is “an important move against discrimination”. Since Berisha’s Democrats hold 74 out of 140 seats in parliament, the measure is expected to pass when put up for a vote. This would be an extraordinary move, considering that homosexuality was illegal in Albania until fourteen years ago. Now if only a certain president would follow Berisha’s lead…

I’m albanian and nothing made me more happy then to hear this news. Reality is that most gays are pretty much harrased and few will take the oath if it passes. If it does pass, its a shock that will ripple through the world because 1) albania is a muslim country albeit non practicing 2) just 10years ago the head of a GLBT org killed himself due to harrasment 3) no gay parade ever in the country … and so forth. Im ever so proud.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Rid the world of religion and we’ll rid the world of discrimination. They go hand in hand, no matter what.
Hell Dewitt, you scared me for a minute, I just glanced at the headline and thought it said “Marriage Equality in Alabama”…LOL
Now that is scary…
I am Albanian 2, and i believe it is great news, though there is lots of debate at the moment. Everyone has the right to do whatever makes him happy and the government should provide for certain categories. As for religious obstacles, Albania might be statistically Muslim, but is the last country that applies the Muslim religion, so they should stop using religion and moral values (which have gone long time ago) as an excuse for their personal beliefs.
