After being given the approval of the Maine House and Senate, a gay marriage bill has been signed by Governor John Baldacci.
Baldacci issued the following written statement: "In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions. I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."
Congrats to Maine on becoming the fifth US state with marriage equality. Keep your fingers crossed that six and seven will be following shortly.
