Oy, get ready for another marriage equality battle! Remember how we mentioned that gay marriage in Maine could be put up to a ballot vote if opponents received 55,000 signature in 90 days? Well, a group known as Stand for Marriage has announced today that they have the signatures.
To make matters worse, it’s been noted that deceptive practices were used to convince some voters to sign. I wonder how many of their 55,087 signatures are people who actually support banning gay marriage? Make sure to read petitions before you sign them, folks!

Meanwhile, how gay do those kids look??
“How gay do those kids look”, Wayne? What are you…12?
Typically, in most states, petition signatures have to be validated, meaning the official to whom they are submitted (or his office), typically the secretary of state, reviews them to look for anomolies like lots of “signatures” in the same handwriting. They often spot-call a few hundred names to verify the person signed the petition. They’re free to disqualify any name they can’t verify.
If they really only turned in 55,087 names, and 55,000 is the actual minimum, they didn’t leave themselves much margin for rejection.
