Here's a fun fact: nearly a century ago, pink was considered a masculine color because it was "more decided and strong". Baby boys were dressed in the color, while girls were donned up in blue–which was considered delicate, dainty and evocative of the Virgin Mary. Obviously, the tables turned over time–pink has become associated with femininity, blue with masculinity. You'd have a hard time finding a mother who'd dress her baby boy in pink these days.
So if pink is such a feminine color, why are so many guys buying pink underwear? Jockey has reported that sales of their pink Y-front briefs have rocketed 62 percent in the past six months. It's not as if hundreds of men just woke up one morning and decided they were going to rock it rosy down under and screw with gender expectations.
Well, according to Jockey, the rise in sales of pink undies may have something to do with the recession. "Men may feel out of control during the recession so they make small choices which may lighten their mood and one of these is evidently choosing brighter underwear," says Ruth Stevens, a brand manager for the company.
Do you think Jockey is right with this theory? After all, several women's fashion designers have incorporated brighter colors in their lines due to the recession, so there may be a connection.
More importantly, is pink underwear hot or not? Is it just for the twinks or can all men wear it well?
