Yesterday in New York a US Airways flight crashed into the Hudson River 15 minutes after taking off. The FAA said that there are no life threatening injuries, everyone was safely evacuated and only a few suffered from hypothermia. It was reported that the pilot flew into a 'flock of geese' causing the plane's engines to fail (actually quite common). Initially, the pilot was told to return to LaGuardia but didn’t because he feared endangering many more lives by flying back over the city. According to news.review-of.com, "Eyewitnesses report that the plane went down very smoothly, as though landing on a runway, which was confirmed by passengers onboard."
Thank God it was not a terrorist act. Not everyone gets a second chance in a situation like this, even though statistically a majority of plane crashes are survivable. I commend the pilot and crew for being able to think and act wisely under all that pressure.
