As you may already know, it looks like Proposition 8 has passed. This marks the end of gay marriage in the most populous state in the country, California. Same-sex marriage was also banned, and more decisevly so, in Arizona and Florida.
Proposition 8 opponents have taken to the streets, and chaotic protests are happening in the urban centers of California. The emotions are clearly high, and several protestors have been arrested.
Three lawsuits have already been filed after Prop 8's passage, citing the illegality of amending the state Constitution to alter the 'guarantee of equal protection.' Though the merit of the cases are still up in the air, the California Supreme Court has reversed two ballot initiatives in the past.
Others argue the repeal of DOMA is the only way to get past this hurdle.
This was a dissapointing result indeed, but there is still hope and we must keep working toward equality!
