Sean Penn’s Acceptance Speech

Did you catch last night’s Academy Awards? I’m glad Slumdog Millionaire won Best Picture but it was Sean Penn‘s acceptance speech for Best Actor that I will remember. The star of Milk touched on how homosexuals still face inequalities in America and included a Prop. 8 shout out.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

  1. Still would’ve loved it if mickey Rourke won. He did an incredible job in The Wrestler…but Milk simply had enough momentum going for it with liberal Hollywood’s full blessing in its corner. Good for Penn and company. And yes, Rourke was not behaving himself as a nominee and did himself no favors by acting like a doofus. Hollywood frowns on selective bad behavior.
While Milk was a decent movie, it’s too bad the industry, given its liberal tolerance, still can’t seem to find its way out of the closet.

  2. With all due respect and just my two cents. What do the Academy Awards really achieve?
    Do they:
    • Control inflation?
    • insure long term jobs for the average American?
    • provide insurance for those who really needed it … so that secondarily those same people can be employed?
    • bring troops home so that conflicts can be dealt with in other ways.
    • provide technological means to solve our ecology problems on this planet
Personally the Academy Awards are over rated, over touted, and increasingly show how out of whack our human values are.

  3. Ummm….the Academy Awards recognizes the best (or so-called best) in the entertainment industry. But you already knew that.
Americans should not be at the mercy of the problems of this country, especially if you’re going to bullet only a minute fraction of what we face. We can still move on with our lives while we work at solving our problems.
I agree, the Oscars are overrated, but I would not blame them for the decline of our values. Sure, I agree Hollywood doesn’t help when they can award performances won by roles where actors played crackheads or prostitutes….but hey, if that’s where great acting stems from, then it comes as no surprise that most of Hollywood is as fucked up as they are. The best revenge is seeing an actor’s star fade, and seeing how they face life as the average citizen.
But back to your point….no, the world should not stop simply because we face problems.

  4. Yeah, Sean Penn gave a great performance in ‘Milk’, but c’mon, that Oscar belongs to Mickey Rourke. He was phenomenal in ‘The Wrestler’, and his name should have been called.
And while I’m not surprised ‘Milk’ won for Original Screenplay, I was really hoping ‘Wall-E’ was going grab it. Also, I still can’t grasp how ‘Slumdog’ won the award for Cinematography. Sure, it was shot well, but the cinematography in ‘The Dark Knight’, I thought, blew the other nominees out of the water.

  5. Man, I totally agree with Vince on the cinematography of Dark Knight…that was balls-out and spot-on in setting the tone of the movie. ‘Slumdog’ deserved some of their awards, but once the buzz got out in Hollywood, it was clear the Academy would generously reward the film with as many awards as they could (granted they did not sweep all the categories they were nominated).
